Did Natalie Portman learn ballet for Black Swan?
Portman reportedly trained for a year to star as a deeply troubled ballerina in Black Swan, but there was a significant amount of controversy over exactly how much dancing she did in the movie in comparison to her dance double, Sarah Lane. Lane told The Wall Street Journal that despite interviews with Millepied and director Darren Aronofsky claiming that Portman’s dancing is mostly featured in the movie, she did almost all of the dancing in the film with Portman appearing in mostly just close-up shots. Lane also alleged that Portman’s face was digitally inserted over her own and that producers of Black Swan told her to stop doing interviews until after the Oscars. “I had read a lot of articles that Natalie had done where she said she did 90 percent of the dancing. And never mentioned my name once. Nobody ever mentioned my name hardly ever,” she said. “I’m not stupid, I got the idea that they really want to make it look like she had accomplished something incredible. And I do want people to know that she did work really hard. And she lost a lot of weight so that if you looked at her you would say she could pass from the arms up as a dancer. She’s an amazing actor. I can’t act like that. But to say that she did all of the dancing is absolutely ridiculous to anyone that knows anything about ballet.” Despite the controversy, Portman did work hard on the movie regardless: According to The New York Times, she lost 20 pounds training and filming ballet scenes for the movie, dislocated one of her ribs and even lost a toenail—but that sort of pales in comparison to Lane’s 22 years of training.
