In season 6 of the series based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novel, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Claire (Caitríona Balfe) was struggling to deal with the aftermath of her attack and rape at the hands of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his gang of men, and she is haunted by ghosts even more following the murder of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds). In this deleted scene, Claire is in her surgery tending to Malva’s body when the ghost of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) materializes—and chattier than normal—he hits all her vulnerable emotions as he talks about her selfish love for Jamie (Sam Heughan) and how she stayed with Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) longer than she should have. “So what?,” he taunts her. “You thought that Hiram Crombie would come begging for a cup of sugar? He has the measure of you, and he’ll be telling his friends that you are selfish. That’s what you are. You took the life of an innocent young girl to protect that husband of yours, didn’t you when you swore to do no harm? It’s not as if you’ve done that before is it?” Just then, Claire’s reverie is interrupted by her daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton), who she tells, “Don’t come in here darling, I’m not finished. I don’t want to subject you to this.” Bree leaves, but the interruption doesn’t stop Lionel’s ghost, who continues, “Why not? She knows what you get up to in here. That no good deed goes unpunished when it comes to you. She grew up with it. The lie. A loveless marriage. Leaving when you should have stayed. Staying when you should have gone.” Season 6 of Outlander continues the epic tale of Claire and Jamie’s struggle to protect their family and friends on Fraser’s Ridge as the American Revolution draws nearer. But the Christies’—Tom (Mark Lewis Jones), Allan (Alexander Vlahos) and Malva—arrival on the Ridge brings with it complications that the Frasers never could have foreseen, including the murder of Malva Christie with all its implications.
