After reports revealed that Rust will resume filming as a result of the settlement, internet users were quick to react to the shocking news, with many voicing concern that Baldwin—who was holding the firearm that killed Hutchins—isn’t facing harsh enough consequences. The actor, 64, shared the announcement to his Instagram page on Wednesday, Oct. 5, writing in part, “We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation.” But even some of his followers pointed out their surprise over the fact that the film will still be finished despite the tragedy that occurred on set in October 2021. Hutchins, 42, was filming a scene with Baldwin when a mysteriously loaded prop gun was fired and fatally wounded her in the chest. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also injured in the incident. And not only will the movie be finished, but Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, will also serve as the executive producer on the film, a revelation that has also left many users on social media stunned and confused. “A woman is dead and a child left motherless and they’re just like, ‘okay, uh…take 2 then?’ Her husband is now the executive producer. Alec Baldwin gets away with shooting someone. Nothing morbid about this at all,” one user tweeted in response to the news. “They should really scrap the movie. This is pretty tone deaf,” another user wrote. While some users were critical of Hutchins’ husband to executive produce the film following her death, Baldwin insisted that the decisions made on behalf of both parties were in the best interest of the Hutchins’ young son, Andros. “Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son,” Baldwin wrote in Wednesday’s Instagram post. He also responded to a hater in the comments, who claimed the movie should be cancelled out of respect for Hutchins, to which the actor pointed out that the completion of the film is the “critical component” of the settlement. While many internet users were outraged, others came to the defense of those involved, especially Hutchins’ husband and his decision to take on the role as executive producer. Many people have pointed out that Rust was already well through filming at the time of the tragic accident, meaning that much of Hutchins’ work is already featured in the film, which will never be seen if the movie isn’t finished. “Her family will still get royalties for the film. Her work will still be seen for the stuff she filmed. If anything I’d watch it FOR her,” another user tweeted in response to a slew of people claiming they will never watch the movie. After someone else said that the movie “shouldn’t happen,” out of respect, another user chimed in, “Her husband wants it to. It’s her life’s work.” While the civil case has been officially settled the Santa Fe County District Attorney’s Office recently hinted that some people involved on the film set could still face criminal charges, including Baldwin, according to The New York Times.
