Duchess Meghan recently emerged victorious from her lawsuit with the tabloid’s publishers, Associated Press, over the publication of extracts from a private letter she wrote to her father. The judges’ ruling that Meghan had a “reasonable expectation of privacy” in writing the letter brought her three-year fight to an end. An undisclosed sum will also be paid to Meghan for infringing her copyright, as she is the letter’s author. The Mail on Sunday is also responsible for paying a large sum in respect of the duchess’s legal fees, which may run over $1m. A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex said that the undisclosed sum was “substantial” and would be donated to charity. The Guardian reports that the legal settlement orders the Mail on Sunday not to reveal the identities of Meghan’s five friends who spoke anonymously about the duchess for the infamous 2018 article in People. On December 26, the Mail on Sunday and its website version Mail Online published a front-page notice that acknowledged Duchess Meghan’s legal victory against the tabloid’s publisher, Associated Newspapers. The notice read, “The Duchess of Sussex wins her legal case for copyright infringement against Associated Newspapers for articles published in The Mail on Sunday and posted on Mail Online.” It went on, “Following a hearing on 19-20 January, 2021, and a further hearing on 5 May, 2021, the Court has given judgment for the Duchess of Sussex on her claim for copyright infringement. The Court found that Associated Newspapers infringed her copyright by publishing extracts of her handwritten letter to her father in The Mail on Sunday and on Mail Online. Financial remedies have been agreed.” Next up, Archie and Baby Lili Were the Stars of Meghan and Harry’s 2021 Christmas Card!
