The final decision to sell came after Somers took a fall down the stairs–the property has more than 100 stairs–and had to undergo neck surgery as a result. The Palm Springs home was modeled after L’oustau De Baumaniere in Provence, France, and features glass walls that open to scenic views of the Mt. San Jacinto desert. It has a unique combination of crystal chandeliers hanging in rooms of natural rock and reclaimed wood. There are five buildings on the property–the main house and four villas–that combined contain seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. The main house features a master suite, a dining room that seats 32, the living room, a separate two-room kitchen, a 2,000-bottle wine cellar, his-and-hers closets, two home offices, a safe room and a stone guest house designed in the 1920s by Albert Frey. There is also an outdoor amphitheater carved into the mountain that seats 50 and has a dance floor, as well as a pool, spa, hiking trails and a natural waterfall that spills down the hillside. The couple, Somers, 74, and Hamel, 84, who have been married since 1977, will remain in the home until their new home, under construction nearby, is completed. “We’re using this new construction as a new opportunity [to make] everything as green as possible,” Hamel, 84, told the New York Post. “Even though I am not one of those ‘greeniacs,’ we’re making sure the air quality is balanced and perfect, and even the drywall doesn’t have all those chemicals.” Somers’ empire consists of several bestselling books, and her line of supplements and nutrition products, which are available at suzannesomers.com, as are her skincare, makeup and haircare products. Her introduction into business began when Somers was the spokesperson in a series of infomercials for Thighmaster, an at-home leg workout device that tones, shapes and firms your inner and outer thighs.
