A pro-skater is going viral on TikTok for what one commenter is calling “malicious compliance” while trying to board a Spirit Airlines flight, but Shaun Hover wasn’t exaggerating when he captioned the video, “Never let @spiritairlines know your next move,” skillfully avoiding extraneous carry-on fees. The TikTok seemed to start in the middle of an ongoing conversation between Hover and departure gate agents while preparing to board his flight. When the camera started rolling, Hover was standing at the counter with his skateboard in hand. “What is it, $90?” he asked. “$89,” a gate agent confirmed. “$89,” Hover repeated. “Because it doesn’t fit in here.” He took the skateboard over to the bag measuring station, slipping the deck into the opening to show that it hung over the edge on each side. “Okay.” He removed it from the slot and set it on the ground. “Here we go, this should do the trick,” he said before lifting his right leg and stomping the middle of the deck, cracking the board. He folded it in half, snapping it the rest of the way. “All right,” he said, tossing it back into the measuring station to show that it was now within the outlined size, adding, “How’s that?” “That was unnecessary, Sir,” the gate agent replied, but commenters disagreed. After all, Hover was just being economical; his wheels and trucks are perfectly intact, and a new deck should only run him about $50 max. Not to mention the fact that, while the skateboard ran a little long, its width left plenty of empty allotted space. “Bruh my carry on takes up more room than that every time,” one commenter said. “ALL THAT EXTRA SPACE UP TOP TOOO OH BROTHER,” another agreed. Not to mention the audacity of the offense taken over the broken board. “‘That was unnecessary sir’” like the board belonged to them or something 😂," one viewer laughed. “Apparently $89 is an acceptable fee for a skateboard but refusing to pay it and making adaptations is ‘unnecessary, sir,’” another said. “They act like the $89 was going directly into their pockets,” another chimed in. One person said, “I like how they act all offended for you life hacking that situation,” but another pointed out that the life hack technically still broke the rules. “technically you’re allowed only one carry on item and you just turned it into two…” they noted. In the two days since the clip was uploaded to his account, it’s already racked up 12.3 million views and 1.8 million likes. Not all spirit employees may have been impressed with his solution to the travel hangup most can probably relate to, but at least one was. The clip flashed to Hover sitting onboard the aircraft with his kids. “One of the flight attendants just came over and handed me these,” he said, showing off packages of peanut M&Ms and Haribo gummy bears. The flight attendant reportedly apologized for what happened at the gate, and his kids reaped the benefits. At their destination, he filmed himself taking his splintered board out of the overhead bins for good measure.
