The statement accompanied a picture of Philip riding in a carriage with his great-grandson Prince George, taken when George was two years old. In the sweet pic, which was snapped in Norfolk in 2015 by George’s mother Duchess Kate, Philip holds the horses’ reins and a whip in his hands while beside him on the carriage seat George has a picture book spread on his lap and is wearing a very cute blue Icelandic jumper. Describing his grandfather’s life as “defined by service”, William said, “I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days.” He also paid tribute to the role Philip played in the Cambridges’ family life, saying, “I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. “I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!” “I will miss my Grandpa,” he went on, but also stated, “Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead.” The Duke of Cambridge finished by saying, “I know he would want us to get on with the job.” Prince Philip, who died at 99 on the morning of April 9, is currently lying-in-state in Queen Elizabeth II’s private chapel at Windsor Castle and on Saturday his coffin will be removed to Prince George’s chapel via a specially modified Land Rover he helped design for the funeral.
