In a new cover story for Vanity Fair’s October issue, the Don’t Worry Darling director, 38, officially put the rumors to rest, claiming that her relationship with Sudeikis, 46, had long been over by the time she connected with the “Watermelon Sugar” crooner, 28. “The complete horses—t idea that I left Jason for Harry is completely inaccurate,” she told the publication in the interview published Thursday, Sept. 8. “Our relationship was over long before I met Harry.” Wilde and Sudeikis, 46, first began dating in 2011 and were engaged for several years before their split was confirmed in November 2020. They are currently in the process of working out a custody agreement over their two children, Otis, 8, and Daisy, 5. “Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight,” Wilde continued in the Vanity Fair story, adding,“Unfortunately, Jason and I had a very bumpy road and we dissolved the relationship towards the beginning of the pandemic.” “We were raising two kids during lockdown, so we co-parented through that time,” she added. “Once it became clear that cohabitating was no longer beneficial for the children, it became the responsible thing to not, because we could be better parents as friends who live in different houses.” “I don’t understand the need to create false narratives around this kind of stuff,” the actress also stated, noting, “It’s like, haven’t the kids been through enough?” The Booksmart director also revealed that she’s been “very up front” about the situation with her and Sudeikis’ children, who she says “understand the concept of making decisions to protect yourself and live an authentic, happy life.” “I evolved a lot between when I was 27 and 35,” she added. “I found myself as a director. And I think I found myself as an individual. And sometimes when you evolve, you evolve out of relationships that were based on an earlier version of yourself.” In the interview, Wilde also touched on the experience of being served with legal papers regarding her and Sudeikis’ children while on stage, which she said wasn’t very surprising considering her history with the Ted Lasso actor. “I wasn’t that shocked,” she told the outlet. “There’s a reason that I didn’t stay in that relationship. Unfortunately, that was consistent with my experience of the relationship.” She also recalled being “deeply saddened” and “disturbed” by the incident, which she believes took “a tremendous amount of forethought,” despite sources close to Sudeikis claiming he had no idea where or when the papers would be served. “If that experience hadn’t been public, I never would have spoken of it, because I never would want my kids to know that happened,” she stated. “Unfortunately, they will know that happened.” Amid her ongoing custody battle with Sudeikis, Wilde appears to still be going strong with Styles, who stars in her upcoming film, Don’t Worry Darling, slated to premiere on Sept. 23.
