In 2022, however, there was no “bringing together” to speak of, and it wasn’t because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was, in fact, because of a Los Angeles Times article. In February 2021, the newspaper published an explosive piece on the HFPA, noting that it had zero Black members, shady voting practices and had allegedly engaged in a series of unethical behaviors. A number of advisors resigned, and a coalition of more than 100 public relations firms declared that if the organization didn’t change significantly, neither they nor their celebrity clients would take part in 2022. Perhaps the biggest nail in the Globes’ coffin? NBC said it wouldn’t broadcast the show in 2022, and after no other network stepped in to take its place, the “ceremony” that was held on Sunday, Jan. 9, was little more than a series of tweets being sent out declaring the 2022 winners. So who did win a Globe in 2022? Here’s everything we know about the 2022 Golden Globes, including all the winners.

What are the Golden Globes?

The organization that would one day become the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which founded the Globes, started in 1943 as a way to network among foreign writers and photographers assigned to entertainment during World War II. The next year, the organization started its own awards, which made their way to television in the 1960s.  Before changes were made in 2021, there were only 87 voting members in the HFPA. In contrast, there are currently 9,362 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which decide the Academy Awards, and almost 500 members in the Critics Choice Association, which runs the Critics Choice Awards. The HFPA claims their membership comes from 55 countries and collectively reach a readership of over 250 million people.

What happened to the Golden Globes?

Even before the Los Angeles Times piece, several accusations had come out about the HFPA that caused NBC (the network broadcasting the show at the time) and many others to become suspicious. The group’s former publicist (who’d held that position for 17 years) sued the HFPA in 2011 after he was fired, alleging that some of the organization’s leaders “abuse their positions and engage in unethical and potentially unlawful deals and arrangements which amount to a payola scheme.” Brendan Fraser revealed in 2018 that the HFPA president at the time, Philip Berk, had sexually assaulted him. The HFPA did an investigation and attempted to cajole Frasier into agreeing to a joint statement that said, “Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.” Of course, he said no. Berk had been a HFPA member for more than 40 years and remained in his post as president for a total of eight years, until 2021, when he was discovered to be sharing an article which referred to Black Lives Matter as a racist hate group. “Effective immediately, Phil Berk is no longer a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” the organization said in a statement, expelling Berk. “The HFPA condemns all forms of racism, discrimination and hate speech and finds such language and content unacceptable." Berk’s ouster came just after the caustic Los Angeles Times piece on the organization.  The HFPA voted on a series of initiatives in May 2021 that included the decision to institute a Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, set up a hotline to report conduct violations and look for new members, among other changes. However, many are skeptical that the organization can create meaningful change this year.

Who are the Golden Globe winners in 2022?

With so many boycotting the show and presumably refusing to send in nomination reels, the Golden Globes enacted a no-submissions-required policy for 2022. and announced the nominations on Monday, Dec. 13. Why is NBC not showing the Golden Globes in 2022?

The network presumably doesn’t want to be caught up in the scandals plaguing the HFPA and is therefore creating distance until things change. “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a May statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.” The network is hopeful that the broadcast can happen again in 2023.

When is the Golden Globes show happening in 2022?

The show shall go on, despite all the pushback. It’s still slated to take place Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022—the same day as the Critic’s Choice Awards, although the CCA is not happy about that. “For years we’ve been trying to draw the comparison between the tainted HFPA and the legitimate Critics Choice Association–which has five times as many members and no stink,” said CCA CEO JeremyBerlin. “Our awards are the considered judgment of almost 500 active critics and entertainment reporters who cover film and television and collectively reach virtually every entertainment consumer in the U.S. and Canada every day. While the CCA proudly lists and displays pictures of all its members on our website, the HFPA has long hidden its tiny membership. Only now is it attempting to come clean after having been very publicly disgraced for its prejudice, its crassness, and its highly questionable business practices.”

Who is hosting the Golden Globes in 2022?

With so many entities boycotting the 2022 show, who is going to helm the ship that night? Presumably, nobody. The HFPA described the 2022 Globes to Forbes as a “private event [that] will not be live streamed,” with no mention of a host. There also won’t be an audience when winners are announced (although that change was attributed to the “current pandemic surge.” In December 2021, though, the HFPA did manage to line up one famous face—SnoopDogg—to help them announce the Golden Globe nominees on a livestream. Snoop’s most notable contribution to that event may have been the way he famously butchered Ben Affleck’s name. Past hosts have included Seth Myers, Jimmy Fallon and duos Poehler and Tina Fey and Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Ricky Gervais, who has snarkily railed against actors, industry types and the show itself, has hosted the most, taking the podium five times—most recently in 2020, when he promised that would be the last time. “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting the Golden Globe Awards,” he said during his monologue. “I don’t care anymore. I’m joking, I never did.”

Who will be presenting at the Golden Globe Awards in 2022?

Presumably, there won’t be any celeb presenters involved in this year’s Globes. While several stars have talked about the awards show this year, they have not done so in a good way. Tom Cruise gave back his three Golden Globes, and celebrities like Regina King and Ava DuVernay had an exchange about the issues on social media. DuVernay scoffed at the idea that the Los Angeles Times piece was revealing there were no Black members. “Reveals? As in, people are acting like this isn’t already widely known? For YEARS?”  Even the Avengers are unhappy with the Golden Globes; Scarlett Johansson, a five-time nominee, said she actively avoided the HFPA press conferences. “As an actor promoting a film, one is expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences as well as awards shows,” she said in May 2021. “In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences.” Her sentiments were echoed by Mark Ruffalo, who actually has a Golden Globe himself. “Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past,” he tweeted that same month. “Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award.”

Who is boycotting the Golden Globe Awards?

HFPA president Ali Sar responded, saying, “We hear your concerns about the changes our association needs to make and want to assure you that we are working diligently on all of them… we truly believe that our plan will drive meaningful reform and inclusion within our Association and in a way that the entire industry can be proud of.”

How are HFPA members chosen?

Since, until this year, fewer than 100 people were deciding all the winners in such a big awards show, they must be super special folks, right? Well, all members must cover entertainment for a foreign publication. Before changes were in place, to become a member, people had to work for a foreign media outlet, base themselves in California, submit writing clips, pay a $500 fee and get sponsored by not one, but two active members. It’s easy to see how that would give the group a secret society vibe. In 2021, due to fallout over the LA Times piece, all members had to re-apply–and will have to do so every year. Sponsorships are gone, they no longer have to be in southern California, membership has gone up by 20% and there are now 105 members, 5.7% of whom are black. Going forward, the HFPA plans to now share names, country representation and the demographic makeup of the organization.

Who selects Golden Globe winners?

Every year, HFPA members meet to ensure that all nominated films, shows and songs are nominated in the proper categories. Then a ‘reminders’ list is drawn up to show all eligible nominations. Members then receive a ballot and choose five nominees in each category. They can mark their favorites in order of preference from one to five, which can be helpful if there is a tie. The membership then votes on the people who receive the most votes; a plurality is needed to award a winner. That’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway. “One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe… officially,” 2010 host Ricky Gervais joked. Many outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, have pointed out that the members can be swayed by gifts and special treatment. In the past, members have been gifted trips to Paris, expensive watches and fragrances and even a private Cher concert.
